Glasgow Mela 2008 is jam packed with things to see and do throughout the day. This year, there will be two stages; The World Stage and The Commonwealth Stage. There will also be an area for young children; The Kidz Zone and for older children and young adults: The Grid Zone. To help plan your day please see running order below.

The aim of the National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland is to foster excellence while giving performance and developmental opportunities to talented young musicians that might otherwise be unavailable to them. The band plays in their own kilts to reflect the Scotland wide nature of the project and since its inception it has travelled as far as China , Mexico and Spain to perform and has even appeared on the flagship children’s TV show Blue Peter.

Glasgow based Tiger Style are brothers, Raj and Pops. Trained in all various forms of Punjabi folk, their music also incorporates Hip Hop, Drum n Bass and Dance. Their impressive back catalogue features many hits including The Rising, Nachna Onda Nei and club anthem Punjabi’s . . lean back. Tigerstyle have been widely credited for bringing a new sound and style to the Punjabi music scene. Northern Lights are back after hosting the Glasgow Mela in 2004 and performing their debut album at the Mela in 2005. Their previous album Sparked held the number 1 spot for a record 7 weeks in the BBC Asian Network Chart. They return with a new Album Relit and are ready to rock Glasgow Mela 2008 with a performance featuring live dancers, percussionists, singers and much more.

Glasgow Mela’s headline act hardly needs any introduction. Winner of multiple UK Asian Music Awards, Sukshinder Shinda is a gifted singer, composer and producer. Shinda has been a force in the Asian music scene releasing over 200 albums over the past 15 years including Balle, Collaborations and most recently Living the Dream. Now one of the leading artists in the UK’s Bhangra scene, we are thrilled to welcome Sukshinder to this year’s Mela. We hope you will join us in giving him a big Glasgow welcome when he takes to the stage at 7pm.

Baluji Shrivastav has performed as a classical sitar player throughout the world. He has composed music for dance and theatre, pioneering many new music projects. Much in demand as a session player, he has recorded with the likes of Annie Lennox, Jazzy B, Massive Attack and Jah Wobble amongst others.

Northern Rock Festival Group is a registered charity helping local people in the North Glasgow to enhance their skills and talents through accessing a wide range of music and performing arts activities.
They will be offering free workshops in beatbox, DJing and MCing throughout the day climaxing with a beatbox competition open to all levels of talent.

Skateboarding Workshops

Radworx is an initiative from South Lanarkshire that brings urban sports to schools allowing children of all ages to come and try skateboarding, inline skating and BMX. Radworx junior ramp will be on site throughout the day for free workshops and all equipment will be supplied. This is an opportunity to try new skills at the hands of experienced and professional skateboarders.
